This story is gripping, and the photos--esp. the one with Josie on your father's shoulders--tell such emotionally charged stories. I am very curious about how Josie's mother ended up in New York and married a Chinese man. I married a Swede many years ago and almost had a Swedish-Chinese child... well, he was an alcoholic (alcoholism is rampant in Sweden) and I'm relieved that we didn't have any children after all. Nonetheless, to see this photo of a Swedish-Chinese girl evoked some sadness and regret in me. It seems that your father was stoic and kept his sorrow close to his chest. I can only imagine how traumatic it had been for him to lose Josie.

Did anyone manage to track down Josie later, or is that for another story?
